Informed Consent Essentials

Informed consent is more than a signature on a form. This foundational workshop gives you the knowledge and practical skills to conduct the consent process ethically, confidently and in line with regulatory and Melbourne Children's requirements.

It is essential for investigators, study coordinators and anyone involved in consenting participants in research projects. It is also a vauable refresher for experienced researchers.

Through presentations, case studies and interactive scenarios, you will explore:

  • What informed consent is and why it matters
  • Regulations, Melbourne Children's policies and the ethics review process
  • Methods and modes of consent, including written, verbal, opt-out, waiver, remote and electronic
  • Who can obtain and provide consent, including assent for children and young people
  • Tailoring consent to your participants and checking their understanding
  • Re-consenting, documenting and filing consent

After attending, you will understand your responsibilities and be better equipped to run consent discussions that genuinely support participant understanding and choice.

Looking to build on these skills? Our Informed Consent in Clincial Trials workshop explores consent in clinical trials in more depth. Completing this workshop first is recommended, but not mandatory.
